The Upstate Senior Band had its inaugural practice in May of 1999 meeting at the Sears Shelter in McPherson Park near downtown Greenville.  It was started as a result of an announcement in the monthly newsletter of Senior Action asking for any interested seniors to join in the creation of a marching band.  With a philosophy that encouraged pleasure and relaxed participation, the initial five members grew to fifteen by the fall of that year.  During the next ten years, the band grew to include thirty three members.  Currently there are approximately fifty members whose median age is 76, several over 90 and enjoy providing musical entertainment within various communities of the upstate.

Music selections of the band include sounds of the big bands (40's and 50's), swing, patriotic, marches, pop tunes, novelties and broadway show tunes.  Concerts are presented at no charge although donations are accepted to help cover costs of music and equipment.  The band plays for churches, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, parties, patriotic programs, community events and dinner engagements. The band never did march anywhere.

The band is always looking for new members. We especially need clarinets and trombones. If you are at least 55 years of age (male or female) and have played a musical instrument, the band would welcome you.  Bring your instrument to the weekly Tuesday morning rehearsals, 10:00 A. M. - 12:00 Noon at the Senior Action Center located at 50 Directors Dr. Greenville S. C. 29615.
