The original Carolinians was founded in the 1940s by Furman Neal and later run by Tom Tzouvelakas and Al Bergman. Al Bergman was a member of the Upstate Senior Band until his death at age 97.
Carolinians was re-established in 2013. We currently have 18 members from the Upstate Senior
Band. 7 trumpets (one doubles on flugelhorn), four trombones, four saxes (one doubles on clarinet), a piano, string bass and
trap set (drums). Ron Hamilton is the director and occasionally plays clarinet
or saxophone solos up front. Many numbers include improvisational sections played by a half dozen or so of the players (one at a time of course).
